Best Time for a Photographic Safari in Northern Tanzania

To take the best photos of wildlife and their surroundings, you will need the perfect weather and the best natural lighting you can possible get. This is during the warm and dry season, when the sky is blue and there is zero to less cloud cover.

  • Absolute prime: 15 July – 20 October
Golden dry-season light, short grass, animals concentrated around water = razor-sharp images + dramatic dust/sunsets. Peak Mara River crossings (Aug–Sept) give the most intense action shots on the planet.
  • Secret sweet spot: 20 January – 10 March
Ndutu calving season: thousands of baby wildebeest, flat light perfect for portraits, huge predator activity, almost no crowds, lush green background options.
  • Honourable mention: Late May – June
Western Corridor rutting season, long golden grass, incredible side-lighting at sunrise/sunset.

Avoid April–mid-May (heavy rain, muddy, poor visibility).
