9 Days Wildebeest Migration Crossing, August to October

Our Tranquil Kilimanjaro team will pick you up at the airport, where you will be taken to your hotel/lodge in Arusha, the tourism capital of East Africa, located in Northern Tanzania. A detailed briefing for your 9-day wildebeest migration crossing safari will be conducted by your safari guide once you reach your hotel.

Your own safari guide will pick you up from your Arusha accommodations in the morning. On a decent asphalt road, you’ll travel to Tarangire National Park over gently sloping Maasai grasslands with occasional acacia trees. Many Maasais in colourful clothing will be seen roaming along the roadside, riding bicycles, herding cattle, and driving donkey carts. Tarangire National Park is famous for its massive elephant herds, but it also has a diverse range of other wildlife. Seasonal marshes, savanna, and the life-giving Tarangire River may all be seen from the open top of your safari car. To mention a few, you’ll see zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, elephant, and giraffe.

It’s conceivable that you’ll witness lions pursuing prey or leopards resting in the branches above you.
You’ll drive to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay after your extended game drive.

After breakfast, you will go to the rich highlands of Iraqw, where the Iraqw people cultivate wheat and corn. We’ll pass through the mist-shrouded rainforests of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area along the way, where you could spot baboons, leopards, and elephants in the deep foliage. You’ll be able to witness the beautiful Ngorongoro Crater as you pass through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area before continuing on to the Serengeti National Park, the home of the wildebeest migration, where you’ll arrive at about lunchtime. Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s largest park, containing a broad range of landforms and ecosystems, including grassland plains, wetlands, lakes, savannah, and mountains. You will be driven to your hotel after a lengthy game drive, where you will have supper and an overnight stay.

We go on an en-route wildlife drive to the Serengeti’s northern section in the morning. The Northern Serengeti, which stretches for roughly 100 kilometres from Seronera, is a gently sloping landscape punctuated by minor rivers, hills, and kopjes. Here, a diverse permanent population of species may be found. There are also some very stunning geological features, such as the lovely Lobo Kopje. The Northern Serengeti is a fascinating and diverse land that receives fewer tourists since it is located far from the park’s major access point in the south.

During August, the migration passes through this area, and we may be lucky enough to see one of the most dramatic river crossings as the herd attempts to bridge the Mara River while avoiding the powerful currents and ravenous crocodiles.

We’ll return to our hotel after a long day on the ‘Endless Plain,’ where we’ll have dinner and spend the night beneath the spectacular African sky.

You’ll leave after an early breakfast to make the most of the day. There’s a possibility you’ll catch a glimpse of the animals when they cross the Mara River. Hundreds of thousands of anxious wildebeest congregate along the river’s banks, staring longingly across the choppy water to the verdant grass on the other side, yet no animal moves. It just takes one courageous wildebeest to take the leap, and the others will follow! The animals that successfully dodge the crocodile’s jaws and make it over the river are rewarded with the Masai Mara’s beautiful green grazing grass.

After breakfast, you’ll return to Seronera, where you’ll have more opportunities to see the Serengeti’s magnificent animals, and it is here that the wildebeests gather in the months of April to May for the mating season, before the move upwards for the river crossing.
Apart from the migrating herds, we could have a chance to view the local predators, like leopards, cheetahs, and lions, going about their business.
We’ll return to our hotel for a delicious meal and another night by the fire after an extended game drive. We’ll unwind and talk while gazing out over the ‘Endless Plain’ at the sweeping beauty of the African night sky.

After breakfast, you’ll go on another thrilling Serengeti game drive before heading to the Ngorongoro Crater. You’ll arrive at the crater’s edge in the afternoon and get your first look at what’s in store for you the next day. Keep an eye out for gleaming streams, vast grassland, and an endless variety of animals. The night will be spent at a neighbouring resort on the crater’s rim.

We will descend down the crater floor very early in the morning after an early breakfast for a day of wildlife viewing in one of the most spectacular places on Earth, where the animals move freely through unfenced areas, providing us with an uninterrupted game viewing experience. The Caldera was built around three million years ago when a volcano the size of Kilimanjaro erupted in a cataclysmic eruption. It has a depth of 610 meters and a surface area of 260 square kilometres. It’s a closed environment.

The sound of the bells worn around the necks of Maasai cows is represented by the term Ngorongoro. It is one of the greatest spots in Africa to see the big five, as well as wildebeest, gazelle, reedbuck, and a variety of other animals, as well as over 500 different bird species. You’ll have a picnic lunch at the hippo lake before ascending the steep route out of the crater in the afternoon. You will spend the night at Karatu, a nearby town.

After breakfast, you will go to Lake Manyara National Park, our final stop on our epic safari. This park is 120 kilometres west of Arusha and is very small yet diversified. It gets its name from a small salt lake that occupies about 70% of the land area, floods and dries with the seasons, and is home to tens of thousands of flamingos as well as 500 other bird species. You’ll encounter monkeys, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, elephants, and, with luck, lions resting in the trees as you explore the park.

The park is notable for its various landscapes, which include not just broad grassland plains but also primate-infested woods and cliffs lined with baobab trees. We’ll return to Arusha after lunch and arrive in the late afternoon, marking the end of your 9-day wildebeest migration safari that is ideal anywhere between August and October.
