Mount Kenya is burning again and incidentally, Mount Kilimanjaro is also engulfed in wild fires. In early September 2026, fire tore through the mountain’s high-altitude moorland for days, sending smoke across the slopes of Africa’s second-highest peak and forcing hundreds of responders into steep, wind-exposed terrain.
The latest blaze began around 1 September 2026. Reports placed the outbreak near Kibiaranyeki, with flames spreading southwest toward the Chogoria side. By 4 September, NTV Kenya described four days of fire in the moorland zone and at least 300 people on the ground—Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Wildlife Service officers, Mount Kenya Trust teams, and community volunteers. The exact burned area was still unclear. Principal Secretary for Forestry Mugambi Gitonga visited the scene and highlighted the combination of dry-season conditions, high winds, and very low humidity that allowed any ignition to run. He also argued for an airstrip inside the forest to speed future aerial response.
Authorities suspected wild honey harvesters. That is a familiar pattern. Collectors use smoke and fire to drive bees from hives in the forest; in dry, resinous vegetation the method easily escapes control. Giant heath (Erica), the dominant shrub of the moorland, is highly inflammable because of its oils. Once alight, flowering parts can be carried by wind and start new spots. The same dry-season window that produced this fire had already seen crews fighting blazes in the Aberdares, another critical water tower.
Mount Kenya is not just a mountain. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a national park and forest reserve, and one of Kenya’s most important water towers. Its forests and moorlands feed rivers that supply millions of people and support hydropower. Above the treeline lies the ericaceous belt—giant heath, tussock grasses, and other Afroalpine plants that recover slowly after fire. Frequent burning can convert that zone toward grassland, change the position of the treeline, increase erosion, and reduce the mountain’s ability to hold and release water. Wildlife is displaced; smaller animals and insects suffer more immediately than large mammals that can move.
Fires here are overwhelmingly human in origin. Honey collection, illegal charcoal burning, poaching, poorly discarded cigarettes, livestock grazing, and occasional arson all feature in official and scientific accounts. Climate change has made the fuel more ready to burn: warmer, drier spells, delayed or failed rains, and a rapidly shrinking ice cap. Mount Kenya’s glaciers have lost about 96 percent of their area since the early 20th century; scientists now warn the remaining ice could vanish within a few years. A drier high-elevation environment is more combustible.
The mountain has a long fire record. Large moorland fires struck in 2005, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2019 (when more than 20,000 hectares burned). A February 2026 fire was reported to have consumed tens of thousands of hectares of moorland and spread across several counties before rains and helicopters helped contain it. Satellite imagery from the 2019 event showed a clear burn scar and active fire fronts on the eastern slopes. Heavy rain eventually helped hundreds of firefighters and soldiers slow that blaze. The pattern is now described as a major annual threat, especially in the drier months.
Response remains labour-intensive. Crews cut firebreaks, beat flames, and rely on helicopters for water drops and reconnaissance in terrain too steep or remote for easy ground access. Partners such as Mount Kenya Trust, Rhino Ark, and Community Forest Associations have trained local groups and improved early detection. Even so, officials repeatedly note that they are often “overwhelmed” once wind and dry fuel take over. An airstrip or faster aerial capacity is a recurring request. No large-scale human casualties have been reported in the current incident, but the ecological cost accumulates with every fire.
The same week, Africa’s highest mountain was also burning.
Mount Kilimanjaro fire: 90 percent contained by the third day
A fire broke out on Mount Kilimanjaro on Thursday, 3 September 2026, at about 3:30 p.m. in the Kikerelwa (also spelled Kikererwa) area of Kilimanjaro National Park, near the park boundary with Rombo District and close to the Kenya border. Flames were visible between the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks and could be seen from Oloitokitok in Kenya.
By Saturday, 5 September—the third day—Tanzania’s Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Ashatu Kijaji, said more than 90 percent of the fire had been contained after she inspected the site. Teams expected to reach about 99 percent that day. Remaining work focused on pockets of fire and smouldering tree stumps in valleys. Changing winds had helped containment. Helicopters supported ground crews at higher elevations. The operation involved the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), the Tanzania Forest Services Agency, the Fire and Rescue Force, tourism companies, and residents of neighbouring villages. No injuries were reported; tourists, guides, and staff were safe. Climbing on designated routes, including Rongai, continued. The cause had not been established; officials said a full assessment of damage to vegetation, soil, water sources, and wildlife would wait until the fire was fully out. Human activity during the dry season was not ruled out.
Kilimanjaro, like Mount Kenya, sees recurring fires, particularly in September and October. Past incidents have burned tens of square kilometres. Both peaks sit in a warming, drying climate. Both concentrate rare high-elevation ecosystems that recover slowly. And both now illustrate the same uncomfortable reality: East Africa’s iconic mountains are increasingly fire-prone, and most of the ignitions start with people.
