Mini / Little Serengeti Altitude: 1,400 m Above Sea Level

The Little Serengeti or Mini Serengeti  is a prairie region that is located to the west of the Ngurdoto crater that is also locally as “Serengeti ndogo” in Swahili and it is a sprawling open grassland nestled within the enchanting landscape of Arusha National Park. Here, a diverse array of wildlife congregates to graze, creating a scene reminiscent of its famous namesake, the Serengeti plains. Elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, and waterbucks are among the many animals that roam this grassland, adding to its allure and natural charm.

The only location in Arusha National Park where you can view Plains Zebras is here, in the Little Serengeti. Here, buffalo and giraffes are frequently spotted. Easily accessible from hotels near Arusha and the Kilimanjaro airport, this can be included in an amazing one-day safari.

Located about 500 meters near the Ngongongare gate, especially for those using the road to Momela, the Little Serengeti is often the first attraction encountered upon entering the park. However, it’s during the mornings that this area truly comes alive with bustling activity as animals gather to feed. As the day progresses, sightings become rarer, making the early hours the ideal time to visit.

This expansive grassland offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness a multitude of wildlife species in their natural habitat. From the comfort of a vehicle, visitors can observe these magnificent creatures, many of whom are keenly aware of their surroundings long before they are spotted by human observers. The vastness of the Little Serengeti, coupled with its abundant wildlife, provides an immersive experience akin to being on the renowned plains of the Serengeti.

For those seeking adventure beyond the Little Serengeti, Arusha National Park offers a myriad of other attractions, including the opportunity to climb Mount Meru or explore the surrounding wilderness.
