Urumandi Hut, nestled at an altitude of 3,063 meters (10,049 feet), holds a place of historical significance along the trails of Mount Kenya. Built in 1923, this hut served as a waypoint for trekkers and climbers exploring the majestic landscapes of the mountain. While it is no longer in use, Urumandi Hut remains a testament to the rich history of mountaineering in the region.

Situated along the Chogoria trail, the path to Urumandi Hut begins at Mutindua village above Chogoria to the east. Following a ridge north of the Nithi River, trekkers would ascend to the forest edge where the hut is located. The trail is well-marked, offering adventurers a picturesque journey through diverse terrain, from lush forests to open moorlands.

From Urumandi Hut, the trail continues along the north ridge of the Gorges valley, leading towards Hall Tarns and onward to Top Hut. Along the way, trekkers are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, with glimpses of Mount Kenya’s iconic peaks dominating the horizon.

Exploring the “Parklands” near the Park Gate provides trekkers with additional opportunities to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area. Two options are available for further exploration:

  1. Via Urumandi Hut: Following an overgrown track to the Kinithi stream, trekkers can reach the hut in about an hour’s time. The path then traverses through heather moorlands to the roadhead, offering scenic vistas and natural wonders along the way.
  2. Following the main track: This route crosses the Kinithi stream, passing a special campsite before leading to Hall Tarns and Minto’s Hut. Trekkers can enjoy panoramic views of Gorges Valley and Lake Michaelson, soaking in the beauty of the landscape.

Regardless of the route chosen, the journey from the Park Gate to Urumandi Hut offers trekkers a chance to connect with nature and experience the serene tranquility of Mount Kenya’s diverse ecosystems. From lush forests to shimmering lakes, every step of the trek is filled with wonder and adventure, leaving a lasting impression on those who embark on the journey.
