For Mweka Route climbers, Mweka gate is an exit gate used for descent from Mount Kilimanjaro via the popular Mweka Route.

This gate can only be used to exit the mountain because Mweka Route is only used for climbers going down Mount Kilimanjaro not for entering using more than half of the entire number of mount Kilimanjaro routes including Lemosho, Shira, Umbwe, Machame, and the Northern Circuit routes.

There are few park authority’s offices available at the Mweka gate, used for registering climbers leaving the mountain.

Mweka gate registration and inspection procedures may include:-

Passport / Visa verification
Cross-checking itinerary for every day spent on Mount Kilimanjaro
Cross-checking to prove if your mountain guide belongs to a registered tour company
Making sure you have enough resources to support your climb and stay on the mountain such as porters, tents, food, and water
Verification of Mount Kilimanjaro entry fees

Failure to which entry may be denied.

Mweka gate vegetation Zone

The gate is situated slightly inside the rainforest region of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Most climbers using Mweka gate would be those that are descending Mount Kilimanjaro coming from Millenium campsite or Mweka hut depending on the route used.

Location of Mweka gate

Mweka gate is situated close to Uru West Ward, Moshi rural district on the southern boundary of Mount Kilimanjaro. Its environment around Mweka gate can be classified as rural, with a few residential houses scattered around the area.

Mweka itself is very green with the road leading to Mweka having coffee plantations. Its location is quite near Moshi town where you can access hotels and offices just nearby. Even though large shops can be hard to find, there are shops available nonetheless.

Distance from Millenium Camp to Mweka Gate

Trekking from Millenium Camp to Mweka gate takes about 6 hours along the 12.1 km trail that slopes from Millenium Camp to the exit point of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Mweka gate.

Distance from Mweka gate to Moshi Town

Since Mweka gate is an exit-only point, driving from Mweka gate to Moshi takes about 1 hour via Lema Road covering a total distance of about 24 km.

Descending Kilimanjaro to exit via Mweka Gate

In order to descend Mount Kilimanjaro, all routes use the Mweka Gate to exit the mountain except the Marangu Route after climbing Kilimanjaro since Mweka gate is on Mweka Route. Below is a video showing porters exiting Kilimanjaro using the Mweka gate.
