Preparation

CLOTHES: For the walk up Kilimanjaro, you should take your wet-weather clothes seriously, no matter what time of year. Poor weather can occur at any time. So be sure to pack correctly, have a lightweight waterproof jacket with you and, in addition, a lip balm with a high SPF at 30. Kilimanjaro is one of the few places on Earth where you have a surplus of visual ultraviolet radiation. So it’s important. Don’t be stingy and definitely bring sunglasses. What are the clothes you can rent from the explorer? Sandals for camp and light hiking and climbing poles are both very useful.

At first, it’s important to decide which route you will take. Kilimanjaro has seven official trails and the scenic trail of the Machame Route is usually one of the most popular trails for adventure seekers yearning for unforgettable memories. A short time frame means that the ultimate choice should not be longer than 6 or 7 days, depending on your physical condition. This trail provides you with an excellent acclimatisation and almost all nationalities. Accurate information for prices and operators of this route should ideally be obtained and compared, but in a hurry, you can buy a service from an organisation that offers online booking. If the service is available and the gears are too expensive to be purchased and remodelled in the explore,r it is permitted to rent; so check with the tour operator.

1.1. Packing essentials

You need to take a head torch with new batteries at a minimum. You often need your hands free to help you on difficult uphill parts of the trail. You also need a head torch to use at Barafu Camp. You will very likely arrive at Barafu in the dark after the walk from Karanga, and you set off for the top around midnight after a short sleep. Keep the head torch on during summit night – the general policy is that if it is dark enough to need a head torch, a person should be roped up. Remember spare batteries. Sunglasses are vital protection. It will be very easy to get seriously sunburnt or snow-blinded from above without eye protection like sunglasses. Remember also not to wear contact lenses, as the dust and dryness will cause significant irritation. Sunglasses should be Category 3 or Category 4 at a minimum.

Here are some of the things you might be likely to need when packing for your trek up Kilimanjaro. Once you are actually in Tanzania, it is very hard to find equipment, and if you do, you will likely pay very inflated prices for it. Also, much of the locally made gear is of unknown quality. Most of the gear will be used by the porters to carry, but make sure you factor in a day pack too. You will find below 2 lists, things to take and things you might like to take on the trek up Mount Kilimanjaro, listed as possible choices per each. But be aware that you must pay a lot of attention to the weight limitation for the porter’s load: commonly 15 Kg per trekker of personal/porter’s equipment. It is possible to buy first or basic career items in any shop in Moshi before the trek for the lowest price in the Tanzania Kilimanjaro area. Career items’ price at Kilimanjaro gates is higher.

1.2. Physical fitness requirements

So, I decided to come up with a comprehensive travel guide and some travel information for the first-time Kilimanjaro climbers. First things first, there are several routes to climb Kilimanjaro and they all vary in terms of scenery, difficulty, and duration. My guide is subjective to the Lemosho route and Northern Circuit Routes, which are some of the newer routes and are recommended for hikers who do not have an affinity to very high altitudes, as almost half of the trek is along trails above 13,123 feet. This guide acan also apply to the other routes as well. Read here to browse all the Kilimanjaro routes.

Once you reach the top of Kilimanjaro, note that you can still contact us to extend your safari or even try to reach Zanzibar at a competitive price. If you want to avoid unnecessary bureaucracy then please make sure you purchase your visa online or upon arrival. Visa prices fluctuate depending on your nationality, so check the latest information about the total cost. 3.2. Visa requirements

Once in Tanzania, it is important to observe and adhere to the laws governing visa conditions. An overstay on a visa will result in a fine. Visas can be obtained on arrival, but we suggest that you apply online in advance. All travelers to Tanzania need to make sure they are fully updated on visa requirements. Ensure you have at least 2 empty pages in your passport for the passport to be considered valid for visas. A yellow fever certificate is not mandatory but is strongly recommended. Bring all necessary and authentic documents.

All visitors require visas to enter Tanzania. These are usually issued at the point of entry (at Kilimanjaro International Airport-KIA, Dar-es-Salaam, and Zanzibar). East African citizens are the only ones exempted from visa requirements. A single-entry tourist visa will cost a citizen of the USA USD 100 or 50 EUR and USD 50 or 50 EUR for a citizen of all other countries that require a visa. Make sure you confirm visa fees using the Tanzanian immigration website before arriving in Tanzania or obtain visa on arrival. You can also apply for an e-visa here.

3.3. Accommodation options

Camps are erected along the route, lasting from one to three days. Tents are pitched near lavatories and a dining area. Meals are served at a common dining table. The camping tent is provided by us. This minimizes your packing requirements. The walk to each campsite could be no more than six hours long, the recommended schedule, minimizing the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness.

Depending on the route you choose,  climbers have the option to stay in huts erected on the Marangu and Rongai routes. These huts can accommodate up to 20 climbers.

Kilimanjaro’s allure, its gradual climb and favourable weather patterns are the main reasons the trek is easier than most other high altitude treks. During the trek, these climbers are carried by a local porter team that stays independently to accommodate and cook for all expedition crews.
