Serengeti Sopa Lodge is worth a look if you want to experience that classic style safari accommodation. Even after undergoing refurbishment and a name change to Serengeti Explorer by Elewana, this place has been around since 1992, and was part of the Sopa chain that dots Tanzania with spots like Ngorongoro and Tarangire. It’s one of the bigger setups in the park with 73 rooms, so it can get lively with tour groups and families, but it still feels kinda personal thanks to the friendly crew who make you feel right at home. Perched on a hilltop in the southwest part of Serengeti National Park, the lodge spreads out with killer views over the endless plains – think golden grasslands stretching forever, dotted with acacias and maybe some wildebeest herds wandering by. The whole thing has this bright, colourful decor that’s a bit dated but cheerful, like stepping into a sunny African postcard. Rooms are in two wings off the main area, connected by open walkways, and everything’s light and airy with big windows to soak in those panoramas. What hits you first is how the location puts you smack in the middle of the action. Around May, you’re in prime position to catch the wildebeest migration rolling through, with millions of animals on the move – it’s chaotic and awesome. But even off-season, there’s solid resident game like elephants grazing nearby, zebras chilling, or lions lurking in the distance. At night, you might hear hyenas calling or see monkeys scampering around. The lodge isn’t super fancy, but it’s practical – a big pool to cool off, a gym if you wanna work out with a view, and spots to just sit and watch the sunset paint the sky orange. Staff are great, always smiling and helpful, and they escort you to your room after dark since wildlife roams free. Folks who’ve stayed say the rooms are roomy and comfy, with balconies perfect for morning coffee while spotting birds or impalas. Food’s decent too – hearty buffets that fill you up after a day of drives. It’s family-friendly, with interconnecting rooms and a pool to keep kids busy, and good for groups since there’s a conference space.

Location of Sopa Lodge in Serengeti

The lodge sits in the southwestern part of Serengeti National Park, on top of a hill with sweeping views over the plains. It’s in a bushy area reached by a steep, rocky track. About 45-50 minutes from Seronera Airstrip (45 km) or an hour from Naabi Hill gate (61 km). Most folks drive in with their guide, and it’s open year-round with good game always around, especially migration in May.

Accommodation & Rooms

The lodge has 69 standard rooms and 4 suites, spread in two wings off the main area via open corridors.

  • Standard Rooms: These are simple but big and comfy, on two floors. Eight connect for families. You enter a lobby with a table, chair, and minibar (stocked if you ask). The bedroom has sisal carpet, two double beds with mosquito nets, hanging space for clothes, a safe, and hairdryer. The bathroom’s got bright blue tiles, yellow walls, a flush toilet, a single basin, and a roomy shower. Big windows and sliding doors open to a balcony with plain views.
  • Suites: Bigger and two-story for extra space. Lobby entry with bold colours. Ground floor lounge has a bench, a small table, tea/coffee setup, and a sink. Spiral stairs up to the bedroom and bath. Lots of seating, like sofas, a king bed on a platform. Both levels have balconies (upstairs one’s small and sunny). Outdoor area off the bedroom from the double-shower bath. Extras include a standing fan, double basins, twin showers, a flush toilet, and a bath right in the bedroom.

Amenities

Main spots are bright and open with big windows overlooking the plains – reception, lounge, bar, dining. No smoking inside. Agama Bar has colourful walls, iron furniture, terrace for outdoor sitting. Big pool with loungers and shades, plus a pool bar. Small gym with machines and views. TV room with satellite, curio shop, conference room for 100. 24-hour power from solar and generator, free WiFi in common areas (bedrooms soon). Borehole water, hot showers mornings and evenings. Laundry extra, currency exchange, cards accepted. Wheelchair-friendly. Guards and rangers on-site, escorts at night.

Dining

Full board with meals in the dining room – buffet when busy, à la carte otherwise. Breakfast buffet has cereals, fruit, yoghurt, bread, hot stuff like bacon, eggs made how you like. Lunch three courses like satay starters, mains such as burgers or fish, and dessert options. Packed lunches for drives. Dinner is usually table service, sometimes themed like an African buffet with stews, chapati, and salads. Specials extra like bush lunches or BBQs. Room service is arranged ahead (no room phones). Drinks extra – beer around $4, wine $30. Bottled water provided.

What Makes Serengeti Sopa Unique

This lodge’s hilltop perch gives unbeatable panoramic views over the Serengeti plains, especially for migration watching. Its colourful, vibrant decor stands out, creating a cheerful vibe. Bigger size means it’s lively and family-oriented with interconnecting rooms, kids’ activities like pool and games, but still personal with friendly staff. Eco touches like solar power keep it green. Good value for groups or families wanting hotel perks in the bush, plus resident game right nearby – animals often visit close by. Not super intimate, but the location away from crowds and all-year-round appeal set it apart for easy, fun safaris.
