Dunia Camp stands as a pioneering gem in Tanzania’s iconic Serengeti National Park, offering an intimate and empowering safari experience that redefines luxury in the wild. Nestled near the dramatic granite outcrops of the Moru Kopjes in the southern reaches of the central Serengeti, this boutique tented camp is Africa’s first and only fully women-operated safari property. Every aspect of the camp — from daily operations to guest care — is led by a dedicated team of Tanzanian women who bring passion, warmth, and professionalism to every moment. These trailblazing staff members are not only exceptional hosts but also role models in their communities, challenging traditional gender roles while delivering world-class hospitality that anticipates every guest’s needs with remarkable attention to detail. Positioned directly along the route of the Great Migration, Dunia Camp provides privileged access to one of nature’s greatest spectacles. Between December and March, vast herds of wildebeest and zebra sweep across the surrounding plains, creating a constantly shifting panorama of life just beyond the tents. Yet the wildlife viewing here is far from seasonal. The central Serengeti’s resident populations — including the elusive black rhino, thriving prides of lions, leopards, and cheetahs — ensure captivating game sightings throughout the year. Guests often spot porcupines and other smaller species that add delightful surprises to their drives. The camp itself blends the romance of a classic safari with the comfort and permanence of a fixed lodge. While it shares the high-quality construction and elegant design of its sister properties (the mobile camps Olakira and Ubuntu, and the permanent Namiri Plains), Dunia remains rooted in its scenic acacia woodland setting. From the elevated tents, the view stretches across open savannah where herds may graze within sight. The atmosphere is both inspiring and relaxed — affectionately nicknamed the “Ladies Camp” — with an energy shaped by the all-female team’s enthusiasm, frequent singing, dancing, and genuine smiles that make every stay feel like a personal celebration of the African wilderness. Dunia Camp is deliberately intimate, with just eight tents, allowing for personalised service that feels exclusive without being stuffy. Whether you are watching the sunrise paint the plains golden or listening to the evening chorus of hyenas under a star-filled sky, the camp delivers an immersive blend of raw nature and refined comfort.
Accommodation & Tents
Dunia Camp features eight spacious, airy tents that combine classic safari style with modern comforts. Each tent can be configured with either twin beds or a king-size bed dressed in crisp linens, a cosy charcoal-grey blanket, and colourful, patterned cushions. A rustic white-washed headboard with bold black detailing adds character, while chunky wooden furniture includes three lockable trunks for secure storage and storm lanterns that create a warm evening glow. Additional thoughtful touches include a writing desk with a built-in charging station, a turquoise chaise longue for relaxation, and a spacious wooden wardrobe. At the rear of each tent lies a private en-suite bathroom equipped with flush toilets, hot-water showers heated by solar power, twin basins, a large mirror, and a generous clothing rack. High-quality toiletries, body lotion, shampoo, and soap are provided. The tents are raised approximately one metre off the ground for better views and ventilation. At the front, a screened porch serves as a private lounge that can be closed off with a gauze sliding door. This opens onto a sunken deck furnished with built-in sofas and a coffee table — the ideal spot to enjoy morning coffee while scanning the plains for wildlife. During migration season, wildebeest herds frequently pass within sight of the tents. The design allows flexibility: a daybed can easily be converted into a third bed, making the tents suitable for small families or groups. Overall, the accommodation offers a noticeably higher level of comfort and space than typical mobile camps in the region while retaining an authentic under-canvas feel.
Location
Dunia Camp is located near the Moru Kopjes in the southern part of Tanzania’s central Serengeti National Park. This prime position places it directly in the path of the Great Migration while also being surrounded by excellent resident wildlife year-round. The camp sits within a peaceful acacia woodland that opens onto sweeping savannah plains, offering guests both shaded seclusion and expansive views.
Amenities
The heart of the camp consists of two large, adjoining mess tents that house a comfortable lounge and dining area. The lounge features plush cream sofas and striking red armchairs arranged to maximise views of the Serengeti plains and the evening campfire. Decorative wooden statues and vases of dried flowers create an elegant yet homely atmosphere, while the bar is thoughtfully set atop a wooden chest. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the camp, including in the guest tents and main areas. Outside, generous veranda seating provides additional space to relax and soak in the surroundings, and a small curio tent offers souvenirs. All tents and public areas are designed for comfort and flow, with raised platforms and natural ventilation keeping interiors cool and airy. Activities centre on game drives — either private or with resident guides — which benefit from the camp’s location, allowing earlier departures and later returns than other vehicles in the Moru Kopjes area. Birdwatching, cultural excursions, hot-air ballooning, and private activities can also be arranged. Children aged five years and older are warmly welcomed.
Dining
Dunia Camp operates on a Full Board & Activities basis, with most drinks included (except premium wines and spirits). Fresh bottled water is provided in every tent; tap water is not suitable for drinking. Meals are prepared with care and served in a light, airy dining tent or on the spacious veranda. Breakfast includes a buffet of fresh fruits, breads, cereals, tea, coffee, and juices, with hot items such as eggs and sausages cooked to order. Lunch tends to be light and refreshing — often featuring salads, quiche, chips or potato salad, and a simple dessert like fruit salad or sponge pudding. Dinner is more indulgent, typically beginning with a soup (such as creamy butternut squash), followed by a main course like spiced vegetable curry with basmati rice, poppadums, and chutneys, and ending with a rich dessert such as a chocolate brownie. Private dinners can be arranged at the large central table, while breakfast and lunch are usually served at individual tables. Evening meals can also be enjoyed outdoors under soft lantern and campfire light. Room service is available on request.
What Makes it Unique
Dunia Camp’s most distinctive feature is that it is Tanzania’s first and only fully women-led and operated safari camp. This pioneering all-female team creates an inspiring, warm, and uniquely empowering atmosphere filled with attentive service, singing, and dancing that sets the camp apart from any other in the Serengeti. Although it is a permanent camp, it shares the same high-quality construction and mobile-camp spirit as its sister properties, giving guests the best of both worlds: stability and comfort without sacrificing authentic safari romance. Its location in the Moru Kopjes offers exceptional access to big cats and the area’s small but important population of resident black rhino — one of the few places in the Serengeti where these rare animals can be seen regularly. The ability to conduct game drives earlier and later than other vehicles further enhances the sense of exclusivity and reduces encounters with crowds. From the thoughtful design details (such as sunken decks with direct savannah views) to the genuine hospitality of the women who run every element of the camp, Dunia delivers an experience that is both luxurious and deeply personal — a true celebration of female empowerment in the heart of the African wilderness.
